Choosing a payments partner is not as simple as it once was. While some would suggest the activity is spread across 10 players, I would argue that, once you add in all of their affiliate and ISO relationships, the top 5 processors in the US touch 80% of the transactions. Those top 5 are all publicly traded companies, which wasn’t always the case. As a result of Wall Street, their driving motivation is quarterly revenue. Shareholder value often trumps merchant advocacy when it comes to pricing models. The key is finding the right partner that is willing and capable of doing both.
